The Inaugural Eric Rigby Memorial Trophy 2017

THE INAUGURAL ERIC RIGBY MEMORIAL CUP

Report by MIKE BANFIELD
Friday the 7th of October was the date organised for the first playing of the Eric Rigby memorial handicap cup and the two teams contesting this prestige cup, was the newly named La Posada Warriors and the newly formed La Posada Braves. It was agreed that the Braves would receive a ten shot lead on the Warriors.

All the players of both teams knew Eric and his sense of humour. On evenings when most of us were dressing for dinner in smart causal wear, Eric would show up wearing a hideous green Hawaiian shirt and it was all the more obvious because the rest of us were dressed smartly. So it was a forgone conclusion that the dress for this match would be Hawaiian shirts, the brighter the better.

The day dawned hot, the players assembled and the ribbing was merciless as members went back to their roots, and shirts that fitted twenty years ago were dragged from hiding places and worn to the amusement of all.

The team photograph was taken by our resident David Bailey, Shelley Greenwood, those of us with their Canon Sure shot quickly tucked them away. After the photo Georg Hamblin our club captain, explained the format for the game and I got to say a few words about my friend Eric.

On rink one the Warriors were skipped by Dave Way and the Braves by Stuart Robertson.
On rink two the Warriors were skipped by Jeff Rowe and the Braves by Colin Lamb.
On rink three the Warriors were skipped by myself and the Braves by Janis Rowe.
On rink four the Warriors were skipped by Tigers league captain and club vice-captain Allen Gateshill and the Braves by Lions league captain and club captain Georg Hamblin.

The game kicked off and was hotly contested between the Warriors and the Braves. With the bright shirts and the colourful dress lending a party atmosphere, the comments passing back and forth were just as colourful, all four rinks were very competitive, the Warriors clawing back their ten shot deficit and after eighteen ends the Warriors managed to win three of the four rinks. With everyone hot and thirsty we retired to the bar to have a drink for Eric and to present the cup. After a delay while the captains selected the following Friday’s league teams, we finally managed to present the cup to Warriors captain Allen Gateshill.

Behind any event there is the unsung heroes who organise these things, the list is too long to put their names here. There is however people that need a mention, Sue Croft who makes delicious bread pudding and donates it to the club to sell and Julie Banfield our new fund raiser. Between the two of them with the sale of the bread pudding and the raffle we raised nearly one hundred Euros for our club. We are lucky that we have a very generous membership, they always support the bonus ball or football card or raffle.

I would like to thank everyone for their support on what was a very hot Friday and look forward to your continued support in the future.
