With Mijas, Saydo and La Posada Bowls Clubs between them accounting for 11 of the disappointingly low entry of 14 teams in total, it came as no great surprise that teams from these 3 Clubs came through to contest the semi finals.

In one semi final, two teams from Saydo were drawn against one another, one skipped by Allen Gateshill, the other by Terry Brooker. This was a closely fought match in the early stages, with just one shot separating the two teams after 11 ends. From that point on however, Allen’s team started to pull away and finally ran out winners by 17-12.

The other semi final featured Jeff Turner’s team from Mijas against Georg Hamblin’s team from La Posada. Georg’s team got off to a great start, picking up 5 shots on the very first end, and stormed into a 13-1 lead after just 5 ends. Try as they may, Jeff’s team couldn’t recover from that early large deficit and finally conceded defeat after 16 ends with the score standing at 22-8 against them.

So, the final turned out to be a “local derby” between the Saydo team of Nick Cummins, Gill Quigley, Nina McKenzie and Allen Gateshill and the La Posada team of Ken Crofts, Julie Banfield, Nigel Snaith and Georg Hamblin.

The match saw a total reverse of fortune for the La Posada team from their semi final win in the morning. They found themselves 0-8 down after 5 ends and, with Nick leading extremely well for Saydo, the La Posada team trailed 3-19 after 13 ends. The next 2 ends were shared, and with no way back, La Posada then conceded the match to Saydo.

Although a one sided affair, the final was played in a great spirit between the two local rivals and provided great entertainment in brilliant sunshine for the many spectators.
